Ebola Spread Expands to New Health Zone in DR Congo
Authorities confirmed two new Ebola cases in the Tchomia health zone in Ituri Province as of June 9. The area lies along the shores of Lake Albert near the Ugandan border and is located approximately 50 kilometers south of Bunia, the provincial capital.
With the inclusion of Tchomia, nearly half of Ituri’s 36 health zones have now reported infections. A wide range of areas within the province have been affected, including multiple health districts spanning both rural and urban regions.
Health officials stated that, as of June 9, DR Congo had recorded 635 confirmed Ebola cases. They also noted improvements in outbreak management efforts, particularly in contact tracing and patient recovery monitoring. Recovery rates have shown progress, rising to 61.1% from 56.4% in the previous update, according to statements attributed to Health Minister Roger Kamba.
In remarks shared on social media, the minister said that response operations are expanding and surveillance is ongoing across all affected zones, emphasizing continued vigilance as the outbreak evolves. He also announced eight additional recoveries, bringing the total number of recovered patients to 30.
Separately, the health ministry reported the delivery of 340 tons of medical supplies to the Ituri and North Kivu provinces through a World Bank-supported initiative, alongside an earlier shipment of 150 tons provided with assistance from UNICEF, aimed at strengthening the outbreak response.
